A Bit of History
Pre-1965 U.S. dimes are significant in American coinage history due to their silver content and various designs. These dimes were minted from 1796 until 1964, with a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper.
The Coinage Act of 1965 ended the production of silver dimes, transitioning to a copper-nickel clad composition, which significantly affected their value and collectibility.
The 90% silver Roosevelt Dime was minted between 1946 to 1964 and marked the end of an era in U.S. coinage. It would be the last time the U.S. would mint a precious metal dime that would be circulated for use in everyday exchange.
Since then (1965 onward), the the U.S. Mint changed the dime's composition to a copper-nickel clad, consisting of 75% copper and 25% nickel, with no silver content.
Thus, form 1965 onward, the common U.S. minted Dime would no longer hold a significant intrinsic value as it once did when it's composition was 90% silver.

What does Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) mean?
Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) refers to coins that have never been used in circulation and still retain their original shiny appearance and sharp details. These coins are typically graded between MS-60 and MS-70, indicating they are in pristine condition.
How can I tell the difference between a 90% silver dime and a clad-dime?
There are a number of ways you can tell without the use of special equipment or knowledge that a coin shop might have:
- Look that the edge of the dime and you should not see any stripes of copper - clad coins are also known as "sandwich coins"
- Check the date of the dime; if it's 90% silver, you will see a date range of, or between 1946 to 1964.
- In general, 90% silver dimes have a particular luster/complexion. Once your eye catches this, you're likely to notice the difference just on appearance alone!
How does this card enhance the value of my sliver dime?
A) Recognize-ability - A 90% silver Roosevelt dime looks virtually the same as any other current (non-precious/clad) U.S. dime. Therefore, encapsulating it in a card like this not only declares it's mintage to others, but prevents losing track of it potentially among other coins you might have.
B) Preservation - Since Brilliant Uncirculated means pristine condition from a lack of handling and exchange, this card acts as a protectant to keep your dime safe from wear and the elements.
